Best Value Picks on the Menu

If you’re watching your budget, here’s where Donatos Pizza gives you the most for your money:

Side Breadsticks Marinara ($3.69). One of the cheapest items on the whole menu, and a good addition to a salad or sandwich order.

Italian Side Salad ($5.79). A light, low-cost option for anyone not in the mood for pizza or a sub.

Chocolate Chunk Cookie (1) at $2.39. The least expensive dessert option, with a 12-pack available for groups at a lower per-cookie cost.

Party-size shareables. Ordering Party Breadsticks or a Party Meatball Shareable works out to a lower per-person cost than several individual sides for a group.

How Donatos Pizza Compares

Donatos’ defining feature is Columbus-style pizza: a thin, crisp crust topped edge to edge, with toppings. A large pepperoni pizza famously carries around 100 pepperoni slices reaching all the way to the crust, unlike the bare-edge style common at chains like Domino’s or Pizza Hut. Its use of provolone rather than plain mozzarella also gives the cheese a smokier, more savory flavor that sets it apart from most national pizza chains. That distinct style has kept Donatos a strong regional player across the Midwest and South, even without matching the sheer store count of the largest national pizza brands.

About Donatos Pizza

Donatos Pizza started in 1963, when 19-year-old Ohio State University sophomore Jim Grote borrowed $1,300 to buy a small, already-operating pizza shop on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. He kept the name Donatos, a rough translation of the Latin for “to give a good thing,” and built the business around a simple philosophy: make a superior product, hire good people, and treat customers the way he’d want to be treated. His mother helped make the dough in the early days, and the shop grew steadily into a small regional chain over the following decades.

By 1999, Donatos had grown to 143 locations and caught the attention of McDonald’s, which was looking to diversify into the pizza business and had identified Donatos as the gold standard of the category. McDonald’s acquired the company that year, keeping the Grote family involved in day-to-day operations, but reversed course in 2003, selling a majority stake back to Jim Grote and his daughter, Jane Grote Abell, as it refocused on its core burger business. The Grote family has controlled Donatos ever since; Jane Grote Abell now serves as executive chairwoman, and the company is headquartered in Gahanna, Ohio, operating more than 450 locations across roughly 30 U.S. states, including a partnership that puts Donatos pizza on the menu at select Red Robin restaurants.

Why Donatos Pizza Is Famous

Edge-to-edge toppings. Every pizza is loaded all the way to the crust, with a large pepperoni pie carrying around 100 slices of pepperoni.

Signature square cut. The Columbus-style thin crust is sliced into party squares rather than traditional wedges, making it easy to share.

Provolone over mozzarella. A smoked provolone cheese blend gives Donatos pizza a different flavor profile than most competitors.

A family-owned comeback story. Donatos is one of the few chains to be bought by a fast-food giant and then bought back by its founder.

FAQs

Does McDonald’s still own Donatos Pizza?

No. McDonald’s bought Donatos in 1999 but sold a majority stake back to founder Jim Grote and his daughter, Jane Grote Abell, in 2003 as it chose to focus on its core burger business.

Who owns Donatos Pizza today?

It’s a private, family-controlled company owned primarily by the Grote family, with Jane Grote Abell serving as executive chairwoman.

What makes Donatos Pizza different?

Its “edge-to-edge” toppings on a thin, crispy Columbus-style crust are the biggest distinction, along with its use of provolone cheese instead of standard mozzarella.

What is the largest pizza chain in America?

Domino’s leads U.S. pizza chains by sales, while Hunt Brothers Pizza has the most total locations of any pizza brand, largely through placements inside convenience stores.
