Best Value Picks on the Menu

If you’re watching your budget, here’s where Salt & Straw gives you the most for your money:

Free samples. Staff will let you taste any flavor, including that month’s limited-edition specials, before you commit to a scoop or a full pint.

Variety packs. Bundles like the Spa Day 2-Pack or Best Sellers 3-Pack work out to a lower per-pint cost than buying the same flavors separately.

House-made Waffle Cone ($1.65). A cheap way to upgrade a single scoop without paying pint prices.

Salt & Straw Rewards. New members typically get a starter reward like a free waffle cone, and points accumulate on future purchases.

How Salt & Straw Compares

Salt & Straw’s biggest point of difference from national chains like Baskin-Robbins or Cold Stone Creamery is its flavor philosophy: rather than a large, static menu, Salt & Straw runs a small core lineup alongside monthly rotating series built around a single theme, a local chef collaboration, a seasonal ingredient, or a cultural topic like food waste. Its pint prices also run noticeably higher than most competitors, a reflection of small-batch production and locally sourced ingredients rather than mass manufacturing. That approach has made it more of a culinary destination than a quick treat stop, closer in spirit to a tasting menu than a typical ice cream counter.

About Salt & Straw

Salt & Straw was founded in 2011 by cousins Kim Malek and Tyler Malek in Portland, Oregon. Kim, who’d built a marketing career that included a stint as Starbucks’ “Director of Frappuccino,” had spent years dreaming of opening a neighborhood gathering place built around ice cream. Tyler, then a 23-year-old who’d recently left a car sales job, sent her a list of 60 unconventional flavor ideas, including bone marrow ice cream, to convince her to bring him on. Neither of them had ever made ice cream before; Tyler bought a handful of secondhand ice cream makers from Goodwill for a few dollars each and began testing recipes out of Kim’s basement.

The two launched Salt & Straw as a pushcart in Portland’s Alberta Arts District, scooping flavors like Chocolate Gooey Brownie and Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons out of a garden trough for their first customers. A brick-and-mortar shop followed just a few months later, and the brand’s habit of collaborating with local chefs, farmers, and brewers on inventive, story-driven flavors helped it build a devoted following well beyond Portland. Salt & Straw has since expanded to more than 50 scoop shops across roughly seven states, including locations in New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami, and even inside Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The company is partially owned by actor Dwayne Johnson, and Tyler Malek published a book on his approach to ice cream making, “America’s Most Iconic Ice Creams,” in 2025.

Why Salt & Straw Is Famous

Monthly rotating flavor series. Themes tied to local collaborations or cultural topics keep the menu changing throughout the year, rather than sticking to one static lineup.

Unconventional flavor combinations. Pairings like Pear & Blue Cheese or Arbequina Olive Oil have become part of the brand’s identity, alongside more classic options.

A strong vegan and dairy-free lineup. Several plant-based pints are made with the same attention to flavor as the dairy menu, rather than treated as an afterthought.

Deep community ties. Partnerships with local farmers, chefs, and craftspeople in every city Salt & Straw operates in have become central to how the brand develops new flavors.

FAQs
