Best Value Picks on the Menu
If you’re watching your budget, here’s where Red Robin gives you the most for your money:
Tavern Burgers (from $10.99). A smaller, simpler lineup that undercuts the gourmet burger prices by several dollars while still coming with bottomless fries.
Bottomless Steak Fries ($4.29). Free refills mean this single order can cover the whole table.
House Salad ($7.79). The cheapest item outside the kids’ menu, and a solid light option.
Red Robin Royalty. Free to join, with a free birthday burger and a free item roughly every tenth visit.
How Red Robin Compares
Red Robin’s biggest point of difference is the bottomless model: free refills on fries, select sides, soft drinks, and specialty lemonade are built into the price of the meal, something most casual burger chains like Chili’s or Applebee’s don’t offer as standard. Its in-restaurant Donatos pizza partnership also gives it a menu breadth few burger-focused chains can match, letting one visit cover burgers, pizza, and shareable appetizers under the same roof. Where it tends to run higher than fast-casual competitors like Five Guys is per-person cost on the gourmet burger side, which trades closer to full-service casual dining pricing.
About Red Robin
Red Robin’s story starts with a building on Fuhrman Avenue in Seattle that opened in 1940 as Sam’s Tavern, run by Samuel Caston. Caston sang in a barbershop quartet and was fond of the 1926 song “When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along),” and eventually renamed his bar Sam’s Red Robin after it. In 1969, Seattle restaurant entrepreneur Gerry Kingen bought the tavern, dropped “Sam’s” from the name, and began adding burgers to the menu, gradually turning a college hangout near the University of Washington into a full-service restaurant.
Kingen expanded the business through the 1970s, and the first Red Robin franchise opened in Yakima, Washington, in 1979. The chain grew steadily through the 1980s and beyond, later going public on the Nasdaq under the ticker RRGB. In 2018, Red Robin began nesting Donatos Pizza locations inside select restaurants, a partnership that has since expanded to hundreds of stores. Red Robin is now led by CEO David Pace and is headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado, operating roughly 500 restaurants across the United States and Canada.
Why Red Robin Is Famous
Bottomless Steak Fries. Introduced in 1994, free refills on fries turned into a signature part of the brand and a major driver of customer loyalty.
Fully customizable burgers. A long list of specialty burgers, plus the option to build one from scratch, gives guests more control than most casual chains.
The Donatos partnership. Serving a full pizza menu inside Red Robin locations is a rare cobranding arrangement in casual dining.
A loud, family-friendly atmosphere. Bright décor and a kid-focused menu have made it a long-running favorite for family outings.
