How Intelligentsia Compares
Intelligentsia sits alongside other third-wave pioneers like Stumptown Coffee Roasters and Blue Bottle, with broadly comparable pricing on single-origin coffees and espresso drinks. Its main point of difference is its early and sustained commitment to direct trade long-term relationships with individual farms rather than broker-sourced beans, which has kept it positioned as one of the more research-driven, farm-to-cup brands in the category, even after being acquired by a larger coffee group.
About Intelligentsia Coffee
Intelligentsia was founded on October 9, 1995, by Doug Zell and Emily Mange, who had recently moved to Chicago from San Francisco and were frustrated by the lack of freshly roasted coffee in their new city. They opened a combined café and small-batch roastery in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood on Broadway, roasting in-house from day one. Geoff Watts joined shortly after and became a key figure in building the company’s direct trade program, traveling regularly to coffee farms across Central and South America, Africa, and Indonesia.
By the early 2000s, Intelligentsia had become known as a pioneer of sourcing coffee directly from growers rather than through intermediaries, a practice that became central to the brand’s identity. The company expanded into other major cities, including Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. In October 2015, Peet’s Coffee & Tea (part of JAB Holding Company) acquired a majority stake in Intelligentsia, with founders Zell and Mange retaining a role in the business; Intelligentsia is now part of JDE Peet’s. In 2022, employees at Intelligentsia’s Chicago locations voted to unionize, ratifying their first collective bargaining agreement later that year. Intelligentsia is headquartered at 1850 W. Fulton Street, Chicago, IL, and operates about a dozen café locations.
