Best Value Picks on the Menu
If you’re watching your budget, here’s where Del Taco gives you the most for your money:
Value Menu items (all under $2). With about a dozen options, including the Value Taco and Value Bean & Cheese Burrito, this tier is one of the deepest true-value menus in fast food.
Two Value Tacos + Value Fries (about $4.37). A combination that comes in well under any combo meal on the regular menu.
1/2 lb Bean & Cheese Burrito ($2.19). A large, filling burrito priced closer to a snack than a full meal.
Del Yeah! Rewards. The app typically gives a free item on signup, plus points on every order and a birthday reward.
How Del Taco Compares
Del Taco’s biggest structural difference from Taco Bell, its closest and much larger competitor, is its dual-menu format: alongside tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, Del Taco has sold burgers, crinkle-cut fries, and milkshakes since its earliest days, something Taco Bell has never done at scale. Many loyal customers consider Del Taco’s food fresher-tasting than Taco Bell’s, pointing to practices like grating cheese from blocks daily and making guacamole in-house. However, Del Taco operates at a fraction of Taco Bell’s size and reach. Pricing between the two chains runs fairly close, with Del Taco’s deep value-menu tier competing directly against Taco Bell’s own Luxe Value Menu.
About Del Taco
Del Taco’s origins trace back to Ed Hackbarth, an Air Force veteran who entered the fast-food business in 1954 running a Barstow, California, location for Bell’s Burgers, a chain that soon converted its stores to sell tacos under the name Taco Tia. Hackbarth left in 1961 to open his own stand, Casa Del Taco, in the small Mojave Desert town of Yermo, California. In 1964, he partnered with real estate broker David Jameson, who opened a fourth location in Corona, California, the first Del Taco with a drive-thru window. On opening day at that original Yermo stand, the restaurant sold 19-cent tacos and 24-cent cheeseburgers, taking in $169 total.
Hackbarth, Jameson, and Dick Naugle (who’d installed the Corona store’s kitchen equipment) founded Red-E-Food Systems in 1966 to franchise the concept, and the company dropped “Casa” from its name in 1973, becoming simply Del Taco. The chain grew quickly through the 1970s, reaching 100 restaurants by 1978, and merged with the Naugles chain in 1988. Ownership changed hands several times over the following decades, including a stretch under Jack in the Box starting in 2015. In October 2025, Jack in the Box sold Del Taco to Yadav Enterprises, an existing multi-brand franchisee, for roughly $119 million, with the deal closing in December 2025. Del Taco remains headquartered in Lake Forest, California, and operates more than 550 restaurants across 17 states, concentrated heavily in California.
Why Del Taco Is Famous
A dual American-Mexican menu. Burgers, crinkle-cut fries, and milkshakes have sat alongside tacos and burritos since the chain’s earliest years, a rarity among Mexican-style fast-food chains.
Crinkle-cut fries. The chain’s signature side has become one of its most recognizable menu items, distinct from the standard fries served at most competitors.
A deep value menu. A wide tier of items priced under $2 has kept Del Taco competitive on price against Taco Bell for decades.
Fresh daily prep. Practices like grating cheese from blocks and making guacamole in-house have helped the chain build a reputation for fresher-tasting food than typical fast food.
FAQs
The biggest difference is Del Taco’s dual menu alongside tacos and burritos; it’s sold burgers, crinkle-cut fries, and milkshakes since its earliest days, something Taco Bell has never offered. Many regulars also consider Del Taco’s ingredients fresher-tasting, though Taco Bell operates at a much larger scale.
Yes. The 8-Layer Veggie Burrito, Bean & Cheese Burritos, and various cheese-based quesadillas and sides are all meat-free, and the chain is often cited as one of the more diet-friendly Mexican-style fast-food chains.
Most locations serve breakfast from around 6:00 AM until 11:00 AM, though hours and availability can vary by franchise.
Yadav Enterprises, a multi-brand restaurant franchisee that also owns Taco Cabana and Nick the Greek, purchased Del Taco from Jack in the Box in late 2025.
